This is a serial telling of my falling-in-love story. Read the story from the very beginning here.
The first Friday after the first bible study I attend, I email the entire bible study list to see if anyone wants to go to the young adult church service with me, the one where I first met you – after all, I don’t have anything else to do on Friday night. You and a couple of your friends show up – you also bring your teenage sister.
We all sit through a service, and then we find out that afterward the church is sponsoring a swing dance. Most of our party decides it’s not for them, but when I ask you what you’re going to do, you tell me, “My sister wants to hang with her friends a bit longer,” and so I decide to stay, too.
I end up being the only woman left from our group, which I don’t mind at all – it’s you, me, your sister, and another guy, the guitar player from bible study. We walk toward what looks like a big tent outside of the main building – the youth wing. We go through the glass double doors to find a large, open room with gray carpet on the floors. Probably fifty twenty-somethings are already awkwardly swaying in the middle of the carpet, while fifty more stand around talking, watching the dancers.
Your sister quickly joins a group of teens – some of the ones just standing and talking – in the center of the dance floor. And it turns out that the guitar player regularly attends this church, and pretty soon, he’s asked a girl to dance. Just the two of us are left now, and we stand on the sidelines, watching him spin, and occasionally, flip his partner.
“He’s really good,” I say.
“He’s a man of many talents. He’s won a few swing competitions,” you say, chuckling.
Then you clear your throat and ask, “So, do you dance?”
I say, “Sort of.”
Then, after a pause, I ask, “Do you dance?”
You say, “Yeah, I do.”
I say, “Well, do you want to dance?”
You smile. “Yeah, sure,” you say.
I am writing and serially publishing scenes from my falling-in-love memoir, about the anguished, beautiful, and spiritual way that my husband and I met, fell in love, and married.
